Hi, i'm scarecrow. Thank you all for taking the time to read this. I'm a 54 year old man who in my younger day's was in the RAF for six years, I trained as a MT driver and spent most of my time stationed at RAF Lyneham until I finished. From there I spent the next 22 years driving a hgv class 1 truck all over the British isle's and the near continent until at the age of 44 I decided I didn't want that life anymore. Now, I live a much slower live in the English Riviera, South Devon. I now work for the Devon and Cornwall Housing Association as a landscape design and build gardener and tree surgeon.
My hobbies include fresh water fishing, building rc models and metal detecting. In July of this year, 2013. I'm going up to my son's house in Chedworth for a week and will be detecting the old WW11 airfield, I already have the permission from the land owner. If anyone is interested I will post photo's of the site in its current state along with photo's of all the objects I find when I return to Devon.
Please, if anyone wants to contact me, feel free. I will be happy to share any info and help wherever possible.
Again, thank you for taking the time to read this.

Welcome to AiX scarecrow.

Yes please. All images of WW2 military (and civil!) airfields showing current remains are welcome.

Chedworth was used for fighter aircraft ops not bomber so no bomb store. There would (should) have been a Shooting-in Butt for installed gun testing and a 25 yard small arms range for ground defence training but I don't know the locations. Those areas even if levelled should turn up a few cartridge cases and bullets. Otherwise, being so close to the remains of a former Roman villa you might find treasure trove!

Welcome to the forum scarecrow. I bought my wife a metal detector a few years ago but she's never used it as she is not willing to approach landowners for permission. She did want one by the way!

Hi everyone
Have just joined up to group at east kirkby at the easter weekend. My brother and I was well impressed with the professionalism shown on the stand and talk about the group so we signed up.
Both my brother and I are both exforces my brother is an ex rock ape (2 sqn) and I am an ex gunner (close air defence fireing javelin).
We are both into old R.A.F. airfields aircraft etc.
My intrest started when I was working in cambrigeshire and coming across the odd building in the middle of nowhere and then trying to find out about it.
My brothers intrest started since he started liveing at newark just down the road from where he did basic at R.A.F.swinderby

Welcome to AiX javelin, most airfields within the British Isles are covered in threads on AiX and using the SEARCH box top right should flush out the ones of most interest to you; or use the Forum menu where airfields are grouped under broad geographical regions. But, lots more than airfields so enjoy browsing. Any photos of airfield related buildings or military looking buildings that you want to identify just ask on here and usually our members will either know or will find out.

Hello,

New member checking in. Name is Andy located in Norwich. Always been fascinated by WWII airfields and their history (particularly the American bases). Until now it's been a passing interest but though I should up my game while there are still a few remnants left.

This began on this last Easter bank holiday Monday when I combined my other hobby (geocaching) with the opportunity to visit a few old 8th AF sites.

I'll be posting some shots from Shipdham in the appropriate forum later.

Other activities are 1940s re-enactment and I'm a civilian instructor in the Air Training Corps.

Regards,
Andy.
