Received the following for the Woodland Trust

"can tell you that the plaque was installed in 1991 to commemorate the RAF Servicing Commandos. It was requested by a member of the public, who paid for the installation through a series of £1000 donations."

Someone obviously had a high regard for this particular unit of the RAF.

Yes REF, I'll be visiting again in early April. On my first visits in the 90s and the museum was always closed, but I thought I wasn't missing much being free. Boy was I wrong.

I am a Hampshire based Historian and Author with particular interest in all aspects of Britains Home Front during WW2. I give Talks and also provide interative History lessons to schools as well as Reminiscence Sessions for members of the retired generation.

I am presently seeking information about Greenham Common during WW2 for an educational paper. All and any help will be very much appreciated.

I can offer details of all the WW2 airfields in the New Forest which I researched for The New Forest at War book which was first published in 2004.

Welcome to AiX John, I spent a few months at Greenham Common in the mid-60s post-closure and we had the run of the base. The Greenham thread has lots of info and discussion.

Many thanks for the welcome. I visited the base regularly when the USAF was equipping it with new communication systems provided by Motorola, the company I worked for at the time. This was in fact several years before the official announcement was made that the missiles were to be based there.

My name is Andrew and I live in Hertfordshire. I am interested in particular in the 8th airforce airfields and WWII airfields in general. In about 1985 I recollect seeing a colour film on television about the Mighty Eighth and I found it really interesting. Although I taped it the recording has disappeared. Someone might know if the film shown is available.

One of my hobbies is metal detecting and from time to time I come across used ammunition mostly tracer shells. Also items of a more personal nature such as buttons. Around 15 years ago a friend of mine & I had permission (I don't detect anywhere without permission) to search at Fowlmere. Found buttons and coins. Howevrer that was short lived. Obtaining permission is difficult these days not that I have tried to approach owners of old airfields or on sites where they were located.
