My name is Alan Turner, and I was an air traffic control officer in the RAF for twenty nine years. Before that I did an aeronautical engineering apprenticeship at the Bristol Aeroplane Company specialising as a design draughtsman working on the Olympus engine for TSR2 and Concorde; I witnessed the first bench test of the latter's engine a few weeks before joining up. My first tour was at RAF Ballykelly where the Belfast to Londonderry train crossed the main runway diagonally 1700 feet from touchdown on what was then RWY 26, and the train took priority !!!! I grew up very quickly I can tell you. I also flew at every opportunity since I soon learnt that, in order to do my job properly, it was vital to understand what the aircrew, especially pilots, faced on a daily basis. Shackletons, JPs, Chipmunks and Hawks formed much of that experience, and I got around 500 hours altogether. I even managed a trip in a Lightning and a Harrier. Altogether brilliant stuff.

I do a lot of cartooning, and have done for many years. I'm a member of The Cartoonist's Club of Great Britain so have a look at and look at "Member's Portfolios" under "T" for Turner if you want a giggle; a number involve the RAF and flying. The website is legitimate honest.

I look forward to having a chat now and then.

Best wishes,

Turnips/Spoons/Honker/Hey You. I answer to all of them !

Welcome to the madhouse Alan. Looks like you might be able to lighten things up when they get a bit tense!
