Welcome kerbgrinder , I grew up in Sussex and know Shoreham well, I used to work at Gatwick and know the airport there even better! I was in the Uckfield area but moved up to Suffolk just over 3 years ago.

I signed-up/enrolled only minutes ago, but couldn't quite get the hang of the 'introduce yourself' option, so I'll try posting a thread instead.

However, I'm extremely interested in ALL aspects of WW2 Bomber & Coastal Commands, particularly those groups/squadrons based around & to the north of York - Middleton St George/Croft in particular.

In terms of myself, I'm a retired construction surveyor, reside in NW Durham & I'm also an avid coarse fisherman. So, I sincerely hope that our association will be mutually beneficial & enjoyable.

At the moment I'm researching the various BC station radio call signs.
But, [Please don't laugh] as so often happens in life, when I've talked to people I assumed would be expert in all things Bomber Command I find they haven't a clue what I'm talking about, believe me, its happened more than once.

For instance, years ago now, when I first became interested in Bomber Command I thought all I would have to do to find the station call signs would be avail myself of the WWW & there they would be; the various call signs, all listed out nice & tidy like. I must be doing something wrong, because it is not that way at all, not for me anyway.

I recently conversed with a very nice gentleman re. the station call sign for Middleton St George who informed me that his wife, thankfully still with us, "had been in communications" at MSG during the war. The lady was at home, the chap asked her what the station call sign was & she hadn't the first idea what I was referring to. Strange, to say the least, but true.

Anyway, I pressed on and finally got some info. which informed me that the radio call-sign for MSG was 'Strapper', I thought that'd cracked it. Not so, upon enrolling tonight, and upon reading various threads, I was informed that the call sign MSG was entirely different, I should have jotted it down, but neglected so to do.

So, I can only assume that station call-signs when assigned were not necessarily permanent & could be changed as & when?

What do the experts have to say, please assist.

Welcome to Aix HPH. I was born and bred in Middlesbrough (I don't tell too many people about that!), so that part of the country has always been of great interest to me. Coarse fisherman - when I was at school I was a keen fisherman - these days I'm just 'coarse'.

The thread on callsigns is here and as you say MSG is reported as different from your finding.

Our resident knowledgeable man in the area is David Thompson.
