The unreadable blue plaque is at the base of the tree in the background. The Hippo' or large Pig looks like the chap on the Barrier who mumbled '' There's nuffin-ereto do wiv the war'' '' Can I come in to turn around'' ? No ! Jus reverse out. This I did among all the in-coming and out-going traffic. Pleasant people these 'Goons' on guard !!!

Been round Corby and Northamptonshire quite a lot myself recently, although mostly in old ironstone mines rather than airfields.

Thanks for the welcome. the airfield research game is not new to me, been at it for over 20 years. Did a lot of work with Alan Brown down in the New forest area in the 1990,s (I think I am mentioned in some of his books about the New Forest Airfields) was a founding member of the RAF Ibsley group, Chairman for 2 years, erected USAAF memorial at Ibsley 1995. I was a member of Buddies of the Ninth for 15 years, secretary for the last years before it closed down 2005. look forward to being on this site, looking to arrange trip to Lakenheath sometime.

Growing up about 1 mile from one of RAF Hendon's runways, seeing a/c in & out all day, must've turned my brain. Served 1964-88, brother, bro-in-law, wife, uncle & pa-in-law all ex-RAF. Interests = wide/catholic. Just nosey, I suppose, with a ragbag mind.

Saw your input on the SU at Hendon, I served there 1961-62, worked in SHQ, and could see the Vampire and tank from the office, often wondered what happened to them. Remember the gliders in the hangar, and EDDU, funnily enough, when I worked in MOD a few years later, one of my jobs was in RAF Recruiting, and I often visited Hendon for meetings with EDDU. The far hangar had a lot of 'junk' in it, including part of the ME110 flown by Rudolf Hess, and the fusilage of a Zero. In the Summer of 61 I had a flight in an Air Cadets glider over the airfield during their camp. Happy days.

By way of introduction.

I first visited RAF Airfields/Bases as a CCF Cadet in the early 50s. Hullavington, Thorney Island, Detling (Gliding School) and Mount Batten.

In 1955 I had two air experience flights in Sunderlands. A few years later I signed on, and then signed off in 1994. One question for the historians: Was there anyone else still serving in 1994 who had flown a duty flight in an RAF Sunderland?

No other claim to fame.
