Hi Catherine, Over the years there have been many theorys bouncing about as to how Glenn Miller disappeared. and according to one Bruce Barrymore Halpenny in his 1990 publication of Ghost Stations III, the Glenn Miller Mystery is solved !!! Apparently Millers plane never took-off so it couldn't have gone down into the channel with a load of bombs from an aborted operation by the RAF as has been a feasible theory? Glenn Miller staged all of this to escape the lime-light and live a peaceful life,[Just like Elvis presley did] the pilot John Morgan went off to Rhodesia maybe Norman Baessall too. The light aircraft was easily disposed of and the Miller-sound soon to be forgotten. Don't think so !! As this Half-wit, I mean Halpenny was RAF Police Special Security and could be trusted with this information relayed to him by a Wing Commander what's he doing telling the world ??? I'm surprised it was even published, it actually reads like a cartoon story that you would find in the Beano. My theory for what it's worth is that his plane iced-up and went down in the Channel, one of many over the years. But as Miller was a celebrity people cash-in on that...

Hi Paul,
I certainly don't believe in any of these silly conspiracy theories, but I don't believe in the 'original' version either. I just want to hopefully get to the truth about everything if this is at all possible and to give Glenn and his band the recognition that they deserve. I don't think that the Miller-sound will ever be forgotten while there are such good bands and orchestras out there. I read about the Bruce Barrymore Halpenny books years ago from the library but the books are hard to get hold of now, like the Wilbur Right books (but I bought both copies of those from Ebay). I will try and get the Then and Now book from the libray when I've finnished this horrible 13 week course I'm doing.

I agree with you it is odd to read that Glenn did a show in one airbase while James Stewart was in the audience. Will have been a good show though probably. Wish I could have seen the band. What an experience that would have been. Best wishes, Catherine.

Yes, I would recommend a look at the memorial at Kingscliffe and a sortie over to Twinwood as well. There's quite a collection of Glen Miller information in the tower there

Hi Buccaneer, no unfortunately not yet, but Noel has told me that the site was the last place that Glenn Miller did a concert before he disappeared. I have seen photos of the site and it does look very interesting trouble is I live in West Yorkshire and everything to do with Glenn Miller is down south so makes life a bit awkward especially relying on public transport in the main.

Thanks for the reply and info. The Buccaneer is one of my favourite planes along with the Halifax and Lancaster Bombers and the Dakota.

Hi Petertheeater served 1955 to 1958 in the army in a Centurian tank Regiment

Rather you than me Geoff7, with the tank being the major threat on a battlefield anti armour weapons development escalated. I did have a few rides in 1960 (as an RAF serviceman) sitting in the gunners seat (no shooting!) and rolling across Salisbury Plain, that was a Centurion as I recall. In the Gulf War I had a trip in an M1 Abrahams, big, big difference!
