Hello everyone,
I only came by this hugely informative site today via my interest, nay, obsession, of airfields & aircraft.
Coming from where I am in Gainsborough, a few active airfields are within easy reach for me. Which I class myself as being very fortunate!
I do my best with my limited knowledge to research active and former airfields around Lincolnshire, and in some cases other counties when necessary.
You could try a Dome Teacher, although there's precious few of the left. Two pals and I were in the one @ West Raynham a couple of years ago. It had been converted to a Rapier missile instructional unit, but with the sound insulation material that lined the semi-spherical walls, the way that our footsteps and voices reflected back and forth was amazing, even in such a relatively small structure. Wish I could have had a band and some smart recording devices in there - !
Thanks for the link Jack - kept dropping out on me but got there in the end.
It is clear that Sharon and her family have managed to trace a lot of people, but where, oh where, did the BBC get that reporter? East Kirby - I ask you!
I envy you living in Gainsborough, my Denton and Gillett shipwright ancestors came from there, but I am also particularly interested in WW11 'dromes in Lincolnshire, particularly Wickenby. You will find everyone here very helpful and ready to answer questions even from a novice like me!
