Can't really help with the physical culture of IOM but can say that there were internment camps for both WW1 & WW2. The ones during the First World War were at Knockaloe near Peel and was only for males. There was another smaller camp at Douglas. Knockaloe was built for 5000, by the end of the war there was nearly 25,000 there. Have you tried contacting the Manx museum?
Probably my best was being at Wattisham when the Battle of Britain 50th flypast was organised from there- never again would I see so many Phantoms on one dispersal.
I'm a filmmaker, who for the last couple of years has been researching for a documentary about my dad, Douglas Percy Cannings who flew as a mid upper gunner in 100 squadron and 97 squadron. I'm lurking on here looking for old photos, info etc about his squadrons and crewmates. We'll be coming up to Waltham on 27th May to shoot some footage.
We've tracked down a good number of relatives so far from his crews for a reunion day at East Kirkby in July which is going to be an emotional day. This is a great resource, many thanks!
Just joined. My grandfather served in both the RFA and RAF during WWI. While in the RFA he was adjutant and quartermaster of Mersey Defence from June 1916 to Nov 1916. I'm first generation American and researching my grandfather's war time history.

Hello 40battery, welcome to AiX. The Royal Air Force (RAF) was formed on 01 April 1918 at the tail end of WW1 and by amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) so I assume that your Grandfather was a member of the RFC (Royal Flying Corps) prior to that?
