Hello all, I'm Peter a life long warbird fan who has also developed an interest in the airfields that these old aircraft flew from when on active service.

There were many airfields in SE Kent during the Second World War but most were ALGs (Advanced Landing Grounds) grass with rudimentary buildings so not a lot survives. The two main permanent airfields were Hawkinge and Lympne.

Actually, I have just joined. I am an elderly lady trying to find out a little (lots actually) about Manby airfield. Last year I visited to see where I had been born and it appeared to be disused with possibly a flying club using it. Did not attempt to go in and there was no one around to ask. I was about six weeks old when I left the area so I know nothing about it but grew up loving the sound of aircraft having lived in South London where there was a lot of activity the latter part of which I remember, including Croydon Airfield. Whilst there I did have a look around local graveyards etc. and tried to find Wilsons Lane but couldn't so presume it no longer exists.

I was born in Wilson's Lane, Grimoldby and my father was serving in the RAF as a mechanic at Manby in 1941. I wondered:

a) Does any kind person have a picture of Wilsons Lane, Grimoldby
and
b) What kind of aircraft flew from Manby during the war.

Hello Sue, Welcome to the forum. Sadly I can't tell you anything about Manby, other than what's been already published in various books. One such is; Action Stations 2. This covers the wartime airfields of Lincolnshire and the East Midlands. A page or so about Manby. Though no-doubt someone on here could help with your request. Best wishes.
