The 'Introduce yourself' Thread

The closest I can find is G-AVVC , an F172H Skyhawk based at Bagby Airfield near Thirsk in North Yorkshire . She was actually up at Eshott Airfield near Morpeth a couple of weeks ago !

I seem to recall James May (he of Top Gear fame) has one; Richard Hammond asked if the "172" referred to the number of pounds it cost...

I doubt he keeps it in Northumberland though...

We had some 1960s vintage Cessna 172s in a training fleet that I managed. Looking at replacing them (in 2002) with a newer model I found that Cessna had stopped making them (not sure when) and had sold the jigs, drawings etc to another company in USA who then produced the 172 R (re manufactured)
My enquiries solicited a unit cost of around 80k US dependent on avionic fit. But, the operators had the final say and we bought Super Mushaq from Pakistan.

G-AVVC is now based at Fishburn.
Good spotting by David Thompson, I took her into the Fly-in day at Eshott last month.
There's also another 172 at Fishburn, G-ATLM.

Thanks guys, Fishburn is a little too far away for me though.

Going a little offtopic, do you think looking at improving the design of the Cessna 172 is a good idea for a project? The aim was to choose something that would allow me to write about the different areas of aeronautics and do some calculations on the data in the POH.

Improving the design of a Cessna 172 will be a challenge if your brief is to make your changes cost efficient.. but glass cockpit displays and diesel engines seem to offer the best value for money in upgrades.
These would give you plenty of interesting areas of the POH to get to grips with... Weight and balance implications, systems implications, performance data, certification. etc

(Personally I think the best modification you could make is to whip a bigger engine in... and call it a Cessna 182.)

Interesting project though... keep us posted on your ideas.

Hello folks from Dorset. Just found this forum. some really interesting chat and information.
I was trained as a 'Brat' at Halton in the early 60's, worked mainly on the V Force Valiants and Vulcans with a short time on Britannia transports at BZN.
Did tours o'seas on Hunters at Khormaksar, Muharraq and Canberra B(I)8's at Laarbruch.
