I'm Colin, I was born in Bilbrook and am still here 54 years on. My interests lie in aviation, photography and a combination of the two.
I visit Halfpenny Green almost every weekend, I remember walking to Pendeford airfield during the late 60's early 70's in the school holidays to watch the aircraft.
I like to visit "the loop" in Wales for the military stuff as well as Shawbury on many occasions.
I find all this airfield info very interesting, I hope I can contribute something to the forum in the future.
I think we were discussing this camp a few months ago actually.
It was located opposite the airfield where the trailer park and industrial estate now is. Herrick Way/Herrick Close are the roads leading into the estate. It was basically Nissen huts and I believe it was also used as a transit camp to hold German POWs after the war.
If you have Google Earth you can see the camp by rolling the time line back to "1945" (which is actually 1955) and search for 51° 53.939'N 2° 9.346'W.
On Friday 31st August 2012 I was elected chairman of the Air Transport Auxiliary Association. My connection with ATA is that my mother was First Officer Molly Rose with ATA. The ATA Association has strong links with the Maidenhead Heritage Centre (www.atamuseum.org
) where they have on display ATA memorabilia including log books, maps, uniforms and a Spitfire simulator which is programmed to fly to some of the aifields used during WW11. We would be delighted to hear from any relatives of ATA veterans - or indeed, from the veterans themselves.
Thanks very much, I am a fan of Avro aircraft. Of course there is a 707 at Cosford, just 2 miles from where I am so that's where my username comes from.
I do have lots of photos of aircraft, both in flight and on airfields.Many of these are at my local Halfpenny Green although I have others from Cosford, Valley,Shawbury etc. I have recently driven to Wheaton Aston and Llanbedr with a view to taking photos but need to return when we have some nice weather.
I'm planning on visiting a few more airfields in Staffs and Shrops in the near future so if I come up with something interesting, I'll put it on here.
