Welcome to AiX mucky. Which photos did you have published? I get BAW every month, its a very interesting read and I have hd some of my photos in there ini the past.

Welcome mucky, what are your favourite WW2 topics?

Good afternoon everyone,
May I introduce myself. I am 81 so have been around for some time, remember seeing my first aircraft when I was about 5/6. In WW11 I spent a lot of time at Cranfield and the American Air Force Base that is now Santapod (we used to call it Harrold Airfield). We had a way of getting onto the base by going through the woods and coming out on one of the hardstands surrounded by B-17s (the area was littered with old ammo, had great fun emptying them then setting the contents on fire (had to be careful with phosphorus ones). I got to know quite a number of the ground crew in that area, the other thing I remember was on their return the wounded and dead being removed from the aircraft. On taking of on a raid if one banked left the next banked right and so on (reason I was told=if one crashed flying straight on the next would have been caught in the blast), I always thought bombs were not armed until well into the flight? What I collected, that is another story.

After my Nationall Service (Army) my interest in aircraft returned, ended up free lancing for different mags. (photograpy), nearly every weekend away somewhere, air displays, on carriers, or at some airport/base or other (not good for your health or marriage), could be here all day with the tales I could tell. After an illness I became a Marshall at Silverston then after another illness started marshalling at Kart tracks retiring at 79 (that's another story).

Spend most of my time now researching and taking photos of places of worship (I want info. and photos of churches and chapels on military establishments old and new. (If you want to help please get in touch.)

Good afternoon to you John, Yes, a very nice self-introduction. What an interesting life [it would seem] you have had apart from your two ill periods. Very interested in your account of time spent at Podington airfield during WWII. Any stories from that era are more than welcome on here I'm sure ! That must have been a terrible experience [though no-doubt exciting for a young lad] to have seen them take-off then return with wounded and sadly dead crew members being removed. Look forward to your input-s.

I too have been speaking with a gentleman of your age recently. His first hand accounts of life around an active air force station near to me are very informative to listen to.
