I was stationed at Bowlee from late 1950 to 1952 at 3613 FCU. At that time, Bowlee was a large station and it's primary purpose was storage and sale of 'Surplus to Requirement' materials. We in the FCU ran type 14 & 15 radar gears primarily for use by the Auxiliary Air Force, primarily the WAAF. The station also housed a detachment of Air Force Police both male and female.
The location was on the Heywood Road. Coming up from the Manchester to Middleton Road there was at the top of the hill, a junction with another road from Middleton and about 1/4 mile further on was the station, situated on the right hand side of the road. O f great interest to us young fellows was the Jolly Butcher Pub.
Looking toward Heywood from the base, the land was unused, flat and as I recall rather swampy. I have looked for any indication of the base on maps for years with no luck at all, but at the time it was a considerable base with an enormous Parade Square to boot. It is truly amazing to me that such a place can vanish into absolute obscurity

Hello, we're Siobhan and Graeme from Doncaster. Graeme is ex army and Siobhan is an Army Cadet Force Officer. We're interested in old airfields, bunkers and MOD sites and often grumble about the ongoing decay and loss of these places. We're mainly interested in the Cold War period, especially Project Emily.
We found this forum as a result of researching Coleby Grange, which we visited last weekend.
Hi both
I'm one of the site admin and also from South Yorkshire, Rotherham way. I'll send you an email with some Thor bits I have been working on.
Just wanted to sign on. I am Jaeson from Northampton.Major interests are Cold War airbases especially USAFE installations, WWII airfields interest me greatly as well. Relatives lived on part of the Old Buckenham site so I spent many summers exploring as a child which is where my interest has stemmed form.
