This is the Skipsea/Bridlington MTR

...is this a building?

If so it's very close to the MTR track and in a similar position to the transformer building at Millom (see my website ). Another possibility is that it is one of the many pillboxes in that area.

I've not seen any evidence of a transformer building on any other MTR, so any thoughts?

No its defo not a pillbox, ive circled the only pillbox in that aerial shot, its still there on the Skirlington caravan site, I know where every pillbox location is from Skipsea to Hornsea me & Mattb have investigated each one. There was also an observation post type pillbox on the cliff edge around the same place as the directional arrows & the quadrant tower. Mattb has some pics of this one.

What strikes me about that aerial photo is the apparent lack of a paved access road to the MTR from the nearest road. The training turrets were actual aircraft turrets mounted on wheeled chassis with an on-board generator to power electrics and hydraulics. These were short distance towable but not road trailers so would have to be brought on site and stored in the turret house.

Tranee AGs would have to be trucked in daily for practice and instructors and maintenance staff so I assume the access for all these was by track running parallel with the hedgeline.

Correct Peter that road still runs from the main Hornsea road onto Far Grange caravan park, the hedgerow seperates far grange park from Skirlington caravan site

great thing about the new GE is you can roll back the clock...

only goes back to 2003 on skirlington, but its far enough to see visible lines and definition of the MTR.
original access roads are still there as beerie says, but yeah, no pillbox on the hedgerow at all there.

and this was out of shot on the original aerial photo.
but heres the observation post, i think this has since dropped into the drink..

Just did, excellent!

So what's this then on Google Maps? Is it an air-to-ground markers shelter?

That building caught my eye as well as it wasn't the usual lozenge pillbox. I'm not sure if it is a markers shelter as that would have been where the golf course is now, just a bit further south. It may be a wing markers shelter though. I have started on a map of the facilities at Skipsea but I am also working on a number of other things so may not finish for a day or so. One heritage website said that the Yachting club even further south may have been part of the post war range control. Sadly no photos online.
