Looked at some gunnery training documents in TNA at the weekend, including facilities and requirements. Lots of info on turret trainers, spotlight trainers, live ammunition usage, 25 yard ranges etc etc. Not one mention of our old friend the MTR.
Really don't understand this.

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite
'Wings on Rails' by WJL Corser (review coming soon) lists the MT ranges we know about. In addition it reports Point of Ayre (NX040430, which can't be right) as having a large square mounted on a trolley which ran on rails between two huts protected by earth bunkers. The huts were at Smeale and Ballaghenie and all was dismantled after WWII (quoted sources IRS Handbook M (?), and Gordon Kniveton's Manx Aviation).
Also reports 'a possible 200 yard MTR at Evanton - presumably on the shores of the Cromarty Firth'.

I think Bill Corser is nominally correct, the area was known as Northern Land Area Range. There is a brick and concrete observation post extant at Ballaskilley, on a hillock within the Glentruan golf course. It is single-storey having a square-shaped plan-form with a large viewing window on three sides. It overlooks the range.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
Furthermore at Rue Point within the Northern Land Area it is possible to follow the E-W route of a decauville railway track and the demolished remains of a main Marker Shelter which is located on a small hillock. The track was used to service eight air-to-ground targets which were placed parallel to the track on the seaward side. Nothing remains of the targets or railway. Both RAF Jurby and No.11 Air Gunnery School at Andreas used the range.

I have pored over a very good quality CANMORE aerial of 1989 but can't see any likely features within reasonable distance of Evanton airfield. Alness (Seaplane base) was adjacent. A more likely location for an MTR would have been Nigg Bay Range to the NE.
Assuming that the 'possible 200 MTR' at Evanton' was for use by that airfield's units it may have been proposed but not built to reduce what would have been an arduous road journey to Tain.
