'RAF Penrhos near Pwllheli and RAF Llandwrog near Caernarvon' a 36 page booklet by Wg Cdr DAvid Annand RAFO Retd contains this snippet:

'Meanwhile a party of USAAF airmen had arrived at Penrhos to carry out a series of ground exercises and training on moving targets at Hell's Mouth'. (Time frame for this was between 16 Jan and May 1943).

In the above post (148 ) I mentioned the 50 minute journey from Llandwrog to Hell's Mouth. It never occurred to me that they might have flown.

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite

This thread went off topic here regarding Naval training. A new thread has been opened.

Something at Hunstanton caught my eye the other day, which may be the remains of a moving target range.

Further to the non-200yd MTR at Hunstanton, there is a larger one to the same basic pattern at Foulness.

Good find. I wonder what type of gunnery it was used for and what traveled on the zig zags as the bends are rather tight.

The only other "conformist" range feature is the tank training triangle (e.g. Cowden) used by the army. Although some did get used for RP practice, though not the triangles I suspect.

Never really looked at Foulness, but there is other interesting stuff (not MTR) here .

Possibly going off topic but does anyone know more about the artillery range at Harlech, associated with the Trawsfynydd Army base ? The trackbed of the railway is still visible here

It's a distorted "dumbbell" shape in the centre of the view, large loops at either end, one in fields, the other in the trees at the southern end. It's marked on the OS 1:25,000 maps more clearly.

This is one is mentioned, and has an aerial photo (1940s) in Ivor Jones North volume on page 26. It is a railway for practice against moving trains. It was used by the RAF as well as the Army. I don't know the "official" name for the range but I have it noted as Traeth Dy.

Sorry, link now updated !

Somewhere I've seen some photos of it showing the remains of the trackbed and embankments built of sandbags, etc..

Had a look at the files on the Silloth ranges an TNA today and early postwar there was a plan to rotate the MTR to orientate it NE-SW (ish). Obviously not a simple operation but it shows they were still being considered post war.
