Could this be the course of the railtrack, with the turrets being fired from the old Ack-Ack training stands to the south?

All the best,

I had the gun platforms noted but didn't recognise the marks as a track. Well spotted.
Do we know if this definitely a target training track, it's a fair bet but be nice to have proof.

I had a look at Chivenor from the various photos I have. The 1942 one has the best coverage but I couldn't spot anything obvious but it maybe outside the coverage or I couldn't spot it.

AIR 2/12786 Bombing and gunnery ranges: organisation policy 1946-51 lists the following Turret Ranges:

Bridlington Bay, Jurby, Luce Bay, Pembrey, Porthcawl West, Tain, Theddlethorpe, Wigtown Bay.

Luce Bay could be West Freugh, Porthcawl must be Stormy Down, and then there's Bridlington!

probably way of target...groan... but some interesting stuff just south of Cowden Bridlington bay. It may also be that coastal erosion has claimed the range.

Sorry just realised PNK covered Cowden in the bombing range thread

There's also a little known airfield not far away :)

I also have three grid refs for Skipsea, one maybe the turret range. I will have a look later tonight.

Not sure if Cowden was WW2 or post war as far as aviation connections go. I have it as RP practice (probably armour) but didn't find a timeline.

Followed the Skipsea lead and found this south of Skipsea at TA186531.

The maps cover the dates shown in red. I have checked and these features are not on the pre-war maps.

As it is now covered by a caravan site I can't confirm the shapes are a MTR but it's a reasonable enough assumption.

If anyone has a photo pre 1980 it might be visible.

Certainly is - well done. I suspected Catfoss might have been a contender, but an earlier search revealed nothing. Damn caravans - they could have built the site a few hundred yards up / down the coast.

What happened to the 'thirteen' we were originally looking for  ?

Hi Everyone,
Thought it was about time I posted something since my website was mentioned ages earlier in the thread. I've been looking at 200yd ranges for a while and have visited some of them over the last 2 years so will post some summaries of remains and some other thoughts.

First of all I think I've found one at Stormy Down, or rather at Margam Moors, about 5 miles North-West of Stormy. Google Maps shows where the base of the turret workshop is. Old maps that I have access to, dated 1940 and 1964, show the complete range with the normal layout of buildings, tracks and walls.

Typing the NGR of SS778854 in Multimap will show the building just to the right of the marker.

Looking at Skipsea (or is that Bridlington :-D) in Multimap shows what I think might again be the remains of the base for the turret workshop, it's in about the right place and it looks a similar size to many other 200yd ranges. On closer inspection, is the rear wall of the building still there and possibly part of the building at the bottom, Southern end ??

More in due course,
Movingtarget (or JohnG)

Welcome to Aix, and this fascinating thread John.

Interestingly if you look at the map in Google (with 'labels' enabled) HERE , the original 'outline' of the track is shown.

Looking forward to 'more in due course'

Excellent find at Margam Movingtarget. I did a "vitual tour" of Stormy a while back but didn't get as far as Margam. I found the Bombing Range at Margam but in my pourings over old maps failed to spot the MTR .

So how many more are there? It seems they aren't always close by but that doesn't always help. Linked to nearby ranges? That narrows it down a bit.

Below is a grab of the MTR found by Movingtarget. I don't quite understand the date of the map though as 1940 shouldn't show it. I suspect a later one was spliced and lumped into the same date.
