Hi, I found this site whilst perusing Google mapping and links relating to old airfields I have fond memories of whilst in HM Army and later the police service.

In September 1975 I joined the Royal Corps of Signals and travelled to Ouston Barracks , 11 Signal Regiment, near Newcastle upon Tyne where I completed my junior soldier training. The place was very bleak and the winters very unforgiving but the camaraderie was brilliant and as a young 16 year old the close friendships I formed certainly helped me through some tough times. One of our colleagues was a young black sportsman who went on to become a household name on TV and as an Olympian, Kris Akabusi!!
I have viewed the old airfield at Ouston using Google maps and viewing photographs from users of the airfield info exchange. It hasn't changed much and for old times sake I would love to revisit the place but I've heard it is now a privately owned property???

Upon leaving the Army in 1982 I joined West Yorkshire Police and my training for my new career was at another old RAF establishment at Dishforth, north Yorkshire. The RAF were still using the airfield for air training (would it have been in air provost aircraft?). Once again very happy memories and another trip down memory lane will see me taking a visit.

My last connection to an old airfield has been whilst serving with the West Mercia Constabulary / Police where we had offices at RAF Defford in Worcestershire. I have been told that the Falklands war was directed from there??

If anyone has similar experiences or recollections of those places please reply. Kind regards GJP1825

Welcome to the forum GJP1825. If you were there in the summer of 1976 you might have seen me deciding whether or not to jump the fence to take pictures of the meteor, JP and hunter wrecks. I think the fence was a low wooden affair - top security stuff, although it may have had a rabbit proof mesh at the bottom.
