Hi Pete, Thanks....that's the post where I found the pictures. My Dad's eyesight is bad but I sent him the pictures and he said he remembered where all the buildings were and where the hangar was. He said that he also remembered when the first rescue B-17 came in as they were phasing out the B-24s. I will try to contact the person that took these pictures. It's too bad these old fields are disappearing. Jana

Hi Kevin Again welcome to the forum . I agree ghost stations series are brilliant reads even if the last two went of the airfield thread so to speak .
My favorate story from from his series is the story of the two women who visited Lavenham and got lost on the airfield and seemed to pick up hearing people and movement on there when it was diserted .
Regards ,

Bomber .

Hi Jana welcome to the forum . Regarding the state of Halesworth i visited the airfield just over a moth ago .
They have now started to break the runways up and crush the concrete . The airfield was owned i think by Bernard Mathews who bred turkeys in sheds on the runways . I did take pictures of the runways so i could e mail them to you if you would like . They have an excellant museum on site dedicated to the Eighth airforce who flew from there . Also, Richard Flag may be able to help you as well .

Regards ,

Bomber.

Welcome Jana.

Destruction of old airfields is sad but probably inevitable. Most were very temporary and if listed buildings can be left to rot and be demolished the what chance has an airfield. Preservation of a few key sites is probably the best route but the rustle of money will ALWAYS win with or without sweeteners.

Hi Bomber, thanks, I would appreciate the pictures. Richard Flag? Not very familiar with the way the list works, is he on the list? Thanks, Jana

I will probably be coming back to England next spring for some sheep dog trials. I would like to get a small piece of asphalt from one of the runways to put on a plague for my Dad, but it probably will be completely gone by the time I get there. I was in England for a long time and I could just kick myself for not going over there then...I kept thinking I would get over to the old airfield but never did. I remember seeing it from the air, at least I was almost sure that was it.

Yes, I think you're right! It's surprising that most have lasted this long.
