Alas, the post-war Laboratory has obliterated most of the WW2 airfield site. The pre-war pattern Bomb Store (long since demolished) was located here:

You are probably aware of the extant round pillbox located in the grounds of Chilton Primary School at the east end of the former BS site.

Plus two more, there is a lot more around than you think which surprised me there was no South east section. Just up the road is Hampstead Norris, Stanton Harcourt, Kingston Bagpuse plus other sites. I have yet to post some of the Harwell photo's on Flickr but will in due course.

Oh, we have members who know and track PBs especially in association with airfield defences.

By the way, Oxfordshire and Berkshire are covered in AiX as Northern Home Counties (don't ask me why:))

Hi Everyone,

Just registered having visited AIX a number of times, and felt I should probably join just in case I ever have anything worth chipping in.

I recognise a number of usernames from other aviation related forums (fora?) I frequent, so no doubt there is a degree of cross fertilisation with those (ooo eerrr missus!).

I am interested in anything to do with aviation, especially historic and military aspects. I do enjoy visiting old airfields, and taking photos of what (little) remains whenever I can.

My closest airfield sites to home are Chailey and Deanland ALGs, both of which I have visited in the last few weeks. I would be pleased to catch up with anyone else form the forum who lives locally in East Sussex if they are planning trips to aviation sites of interest.

Hi Paul, Chailey and Deanland, those names are very familiar! I grew up in Blackboys (there was a WWI landing ground there!) and then moved to Uckfield before coming up to Suffolk. I still head down as my Brother lives in Heathfield with his wife.

I've just joined, so I'd like to say hello to one and all. I have a keen interest in the military airfields of Britain, their histories etc. particularly the expansion period bases or the ones which date from the first world war. My father was in the RAF for 25 years and I grew up as a forces brat. I had great times as a kid on the bases we stationed at, most of which are sadly closed now. They were-RAF Cardington, which balloons; North Weald, had hunters; we then went to Aden; then Scampton-Vulcans; Akrotiri Cyprus-Vulcans, Phantoms-Lightenings; Warton Lancs; then Little Rissington-mainly jet provost and chipmunks. A lot of wonderful memories. I work all over the country, so I try to poke my nose in on any Airfields I'm near. Nice to meet you all.
