The 'Introduce yourself' Thread

Hi to everyone here.

I joined the forum because I am about to start a project to build a web site dedicated to everyone who took park in the air raid on Aachen on the night of 13/14 July 1943.

My great uncle died in that raid and his body was never recovered, his family never knew what happened to Joe Marsh up until two weeks ago...

What I plan to do is have a page for every one of the twenty three aircraft that took off that night and either didn't make it back at all, or came back and crash landed..
I had a thought that on each aircrafts page could be a photo or two of the airfield they took off from and thats where you all come in.

I have seen so many amazing photo's of Graveley on here, and I will be contacting each person asking if I might have a copy of what you have. Joe Marsh was on his first Pathfinder mission with 35 Sqdn, before that he had been with 102 at Pocklington.

I will of course credit everyone, and please feel free to contact me directly if you have photo''s of the following airfields that you would allow me to use:
Mepal, Graveley, Holme on Spalding Moor, Breighton, West Wickham, Pocklington, East Wretham, Lissett, Gransden Lodge, Leeming, Middleton St George and Skipton on Swale.

I must stress my site will be NOT for profit of any kind, only to commemorate those who took part in one raid, on one night.

Hi there, thanks for the welcome.. I have notice one or two of your posts whilst I was looking around the site...

Phoned the place you spoke about, £8 per photo, plus a license, no exceptions.. . which brings me back to the good folks all over the net..

By the weekend I will have something for people to look at.. which may inspire people to help..

You could get it through your local library but it is an excellent 'shelf' reference.

I agree, this one has a place in my bookshelf already. Quite a comprhensive read and good for reference.

A nice project that you are planning especially as you have a relationship with one of the aircrew.

As you are aware, the cost of obtaining copies from a number of UK base archive sources can be high and that can be increased if the intent is to 'publish' the images. Copyright is something that is always in the back of my mind, and, I feel sure, many of our AiX members. With so many images circulated by internet webpages and e-mails it is nigh impossible to avoid violating someone's copyright.

Clearly, wartime aerial images of those airfields would almost certainly have been taken by the RAF and now be 'owned' by UK archives such as The Imperial War Museum and The National Archives etc even though a myriad of people have a copy in their possession, either photographic or digitised so, getting a copy of the images that you seek, will not be a big problem but getting permission to publish probably will be.

But, don't be deterred, I wish you luck and trust that some of our published author members can provide provide some advice.

Hello from the west coast of Canada ,
been away far to long and its nice to be back amongst people that share a common interest . My association with this web site is a result of my father's time spent with 195 sqd ( Flt.Engineer ) 3 Grp RAF Wratting Common Oct 44 - tour expired Mar 45 ( 35 trips ) ..... and yes the ole boy is still going strong at 85.
