Hi Mark. Welcome, got to agree with you about the lack of aviation and militaria in your area. I was born in Wigan just before the war and saw things change quite a bit before I left in 1960 to join the RAF, although in my time there was Burtonwood, I am sure that there are many people on the site who are local to you and will fill you in about things of interest in your area. Keep eating the pies.
Hi everyone,
I'm the father of Mark from wigan, who put me in contact with this site.
My self I'm from Lincoln, I alway wounted to fly as a young my brother and I spent many summer holidays playing on old airfield around Lincoln.
In the forces due to colour vision problem I was unable to fly there aircraft, so ended up jumping from them, at least it was flying of sorts.
I moved to Carlisle twenty years ago and become involved with Solway Aviation Society. From there we produced the Museum which we are proud of, if you are in the area pop in and see us, or even ask for me.
Welcome to the forum. Haven't been to Carlisle for a while. The M6 hates us with a passion, multiple accidents etc every time we use it and once a gun fight! Last time we drove east to Newcastle and then headed south, much quicker than using the motorways.
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)
Hi Mark, I'm not that far from the land of the pie-shop
Whilst there might not be a lot IN Wigan there is plenty within a short distance...HMS Ringtail, numerous pillboxes/defended positions, HAA batterys etc. especially over towards the west coast
Hi Tigger
Re HMS ringtail if you know the Wigan to Southport road would the remains of the place be the old hangars in the field on the right going towards Southport.
Cheers Mark
