Welcome coaster, what is your interest in Snetterton? History before motor racing?

My name's Chris, I live in Norfolk, just a couple of miles away from the former RAF Langham.

I'm into my local history, with a fascination of the many military sites in the county.

In my spare time, I am currently working on a series of videos known as "Norfolk Uncovered", which look at various sites in Norfolk, explaining their history, combined with footage of them in their current state.

With the many airfields located across the county, I thought I'd better join up here, as you seem like a helpful bunch, probably with many answers to my questions.

Chris.

Ah yes... Richard E Flagg...
the name is familiar!

I did put a corrective comment on one of your Little Snoring photos, earlier this year if i remember rightly regarding the direction of the photo!
And also, I got to visit that control tower, thanks to Mr Cushing, the owner.
Did I ever give you a link to the final video from that?

See my channel for plenty more!

So... what do you know about RAF Sculthorpe?
Thats my biggie at the moment, as I'm currently halfway through the production of the video, but I'm a bit stuck as to annotating the rooms in the NCO club, and could do with a hand...

You seem to be a fountain of knowledge, and I've used some handy info from your photos in the past.

I have just spent a bit of time looking through some of your videos, really interesting stuff and nicely put together. I'm not that up on Sculthorpe the info I have gained is from an american chap who contacted me a year or so back when I first put the pics on my site, I haven't heard from him in a while but I'll email him and see if he can help. I have a few more photos from when I was up there a few weeks ago but nothing really new.

Hopefully some of the chaps on the fourm will be able to help, they are far more knowledgeable than me!!

Ah i see...

Yeah- nice to see someone thinks they're interesting!
I like the little-known side of my local history- the stuff which the general viewing public know nothing, or little about.

There's plenty in Norfolk to see- and its not all beaches and picnic sites!

And one day, all the military and abandoned sites will be gone, so its nice to create that memory that the place was there, and I've been there- to show future generations!

But yeah- Sculthorpe is a biggie: plenty to see!
I've been up there several times during the summer gathering footage and doing maps of the buildings, but this NCO club buildings annotation thing is holding me up a bit.

I can't add much to Sculthorpe othe than in 1973 it was all fence and a few tail fins in the distance. Still pass it occasionally on the way to my parents in Hunstanton but a soon as I say "oh look there is Sculthorpe airfield" the engine revs go up and my head embeds itself in the headrest as the wife floors it :)

You don't by any chance know anything about the RAF Bombing, gunnery and firing ranges in the area do you?

Sounds like you dont have permission to get onto Sculthorpe!

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
