Baz - I also find the debacle surrounding Harris and Churchill very interesting. It seems to me that during the war, Churchill was chomping at the bit to expand what Bomber Command were authorised to do, yet after the war he did not recognise their achievements - typical hypocritical politician? It's a shame he couldn't stick to his convictions concerning Bomber Command, and put his neck on the line by recognising the huge sacrifice and achievement of the force!

Tommy - It's facts such as the one you have highlighted which make one wonder why the force ever came under such condemnation, which I feel is unwarranted! Especially considering the crews were simply doing their job in fighting an enemy which seemed to have no respect for human life, as demonstrated by the Luftwaffe's extensive bombing, and ofcourse the Holocaust, to name but a couple of examples.

Apart from my research on the Llandow-St Athan Taxiway, there is a few others who are doing similar work like Mr.Jericho and Mawganmad for example. Both are very knowledgeble on Llandow and St Athan.

Hi Everyone

I've a general interest in two areas: Expansion period airfields of the late 30s (many now seem to have become Army Barracks) and Cold war stuff like the ROTOR bunkers.

As the name suggests I was an RAF Policeman for 22 years and spent a fair proportion of my time guarding holes in the ground, aircraft, nuclear weapons. Retired nearly 20 years ago, and it is only in the past few years thanks to "t"internet" and forums such as this that I have been able to find out about some of the more "sensitive" areas I worked in or visited.

I imagine the percentage loss rate of Bomber Command compared to almost any other element of the armed forces would be high - I think anyone can see they made an incredible sacrifice in the war effort.

I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to be in contact with Bomber Command veterans, through a partnership with the No. 77 Squadron RAF Association, based in Elvington. I agree with you r.e. the context of history, which is why I feel so grateful to include the views of veterans in my research - evidence doesn't get much more primary than that! I have managed to find some local papers to research, but I have never come across the BNA, so thankyou for bringing it to my attention!

As to some of the other areas - mostly all de-classified now that the Cold War is a distant memory , though there are a couple of sites I pass regularly and think . Hmmm New fence, more CCTV, lick of paint....

Hi,I joined this group as I need some info on raf kirmington. I'm planning on taking my family to kirmington as my grandad served with 166 squadron. I know there is a memorial etc in kirmington but does anyone know if anything at all is left of the old airfield that you can see without being too intrusive?. Any info would be very grateful. Cheers.
