The 'Introduce yourself' Thread

Dear All,

My name is Jay Slater and am the commissioning editor at Fonthill Media, a new specialist book publisher dedicated to aviation and military subjects. We launched this year with great success in the UK and US and are planning much growth and expansion for 2013 and 2014 onwards. Before joining Fonthill - and am loving the mission - I commissioned and editing aviation and airfield books for The History Press and Ian Allan Publishing, notably Battle of Britain Airfields and Japanese Secret Projects.

With that being said, I would like to establish a new range of airfield and aviation books. Indeed, we have some to be launched in early 2013 and I am sure that they will be of interest to the airfield/aviation community. We genuinely love the industry and the subjects, and unlike other specialist publishers, we read such books in our spare time. In essence, we take the subject matter seriously.

We publish a quarterly magazine and for a fee we can arrange advertising in the magazine and the forum. No doubt proper advertising is what you are looking for. After all, its best the publishers do things properly.

Been trying to write a book for 10+ years but every potential publisher I've contacted has liked the idea but has run away as they don't want to pay the IWM for the license to use the pictures.

Kinda took the wind out of my sails so I stopped. Stupid bloody image licensing.

Yes, it would have been easier living there as I used to, but I use the opportunities I have when visiting the UK by car a couple or three
times a year. And, it is not really that far from Denmark!

As for you historians out there; I remember spending two memorable days with Ginger Lacey at Bridlington after I had an emergency landing there in 1973 with a Cessna A-188 Ag-wagon (G-BANI), enroute from East Fortune to Hardwick for repairs after a wire-strike. I was passing east abeam Bridlington at 800 feet, when the engine RPM suddenly fell to 800RPM. As I was on short final to Bridlington, I just turned 90° right and landed without further whoa, to be greeted by Ginger, at the time instructing in the local aero club! A very, very pleasant guy, we found rapport right away and spent the next couple of days in the bar in the clubhouse, telling each other more or less thruthfull stories!

I have a little difficulty locating the airfield at Bridlington today on Google Earth, but remember it being an east-west grass runway with a hedge to the east and open, ploughed field to the west. The runway wasn't terribly long. The clubhouse and other buildings laid on the south side of the runway. Mindacre at Hardwick hired an Aztec to fly our mechanic up there. The pilot wasn't used to such short runways, he came in from the east over the hedge far to fast, putting her down halfway down and disappearing out of sight from us at the radio-office. Things went quiet and I said on the radio: "You off the runway?" and a muted remark came back: "Yepp!"

Ginger and I jumped into the Willys Jeep cum firetruck and raced down to see the Aztec sitting nicely although fairly burrowed but on its legs, about 50 to a 100 yards into the ploughed field at the western end. None hurt, no damage. We pulled it onto the runway with the Jeep and the mechanic found nothing wrong. They took off later the same day and went back to Hardwick. The problem with the C-188 Agwagon was too much potash in the fuel filter, as I had been doing a lot of forestry work earlier, and suddenly it decided it was just to much.

Sometimes bad luck is transformed into very, very good memories!
