Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have lots of memories to add to the various airfield threads.

Welcome to the forum. I once cycled to West Malling from Eltham in the early 1970s. We had to make our way back as soon as we arrived but we did see the empty airfield from the western end.

I actually worked at the airfield from 1983 to 1988 with a firm called Metair. We were spraying the exterior and fitting the interiors to Saab 340 short haul airliners that were flown direct from the factory in Sweden. I was involved with the interiors, and I went on as many test flights as I could (which was quite a few). Alas, the council sold the site to Rouse to be developed in the late 80s, and it has now become a bricks and mortar jungle that we see today.

Hello ALL

I am a proud daughter of a late ex RAF LAC who served with the 2nd TAF 2 Group No. 314 Supply and Transport Column.

If I can be of assistance to anyone, I have a copy of this unit "Royal Air Force Operations Record Book" from D Day+1 to April 1946 from the Royal Archives in Kew. It is a daily diary of this transport unit in France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. I would be happy to look up info for others.

Cheers!

Morag

Welcome to the forum Morag. Transport of supplies is a subject that is not often covered. Hopefully you have prompted some interest.

Welcome to AiX Morag and thanks for the offer to share information. Logistics support was a key element in the planning of the invasion of Europe resulting in the counties of central and SE England housing massive stockpiles of fuel, ammunition, food and supplies. AiX has threads covering many related military aspects other than pure airfields so perhaps one of our members will start a new thread.
