Hi airfields man, thank's for that, I hope so, were looking forward to our return trip, with any luck I may be able to get a tour round parts of the site, the control area looked amazing.

Excellent advice, A10694, and mission accomplished! They haven't delivered it yet, but it's on its way--from Amazon.com (in the States) vs. Amazon.co.uk, where it was quite a bit dearer, and the shipping would have been prohibitive. I got it for a little over L15. (No pound-sign on this computer.) I can't wait to read it! At least it will give me a better idea of what my dad's unit was doing in the war, even if (other than being a gunner) I don't know what he did specifically. Thank you so much for the tip!

It's also worth looking for the book "Ack Ack", written by Sir Frederick Pyle (sometimes spelt as "Pile"), published 1949, but often found on Ebay or Amazon - indeed, there are 9 on Amazon right now - www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0007J...r=1-5&condition=used

Gobsmacked.

What on earth does that mean????

War Substantive Corporal

All the best,
PB

"War" or "War Substantive" ranks were temporary full promotions, but intended to last only for the duration of the war as the name implies, the next step up from the paid and unpaid "Acting" and "Temporary" ranks.
They existed simply to allow for wartime expansion of military personnel numbers and the corresponding reduction in peacetime.

All the best,
PB

I call my friend's dog Happy. She's the most miserable looking dog I've seen but is always so happy. Great soft old lump.
Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Ah! So an "unpaid [rank]" was the acting [whatever], without the salary increase--much as one who covers for an absent director when he is on leave is "acting director" (the title and temporary authority, without the paycheck)? Thanks for clearing up that mystery, and apologies for my naivete . . . my knowledge of things military is third-hand, at best.

All best,

Carol

Now that the Google Earth Community is back up and running ( although I dont like the new format ), here is the link to the airfield overlay collection.

I was thinking about updating the postmarks on Google Earth and adding links to each appropriate thread on this forum.

Stretton is incorrectly placed. The plate you have used is from 1946/47 and pre-dates the runway 28 extension visible on google earth. If you use the peri-track as a reference you'll get it lined up correctly.
