Hi All
I Am a new member who over the years has past many a happy hour exploring and seeking out the old airfields of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. On a recent camping trip with my 24 years old son, we went to Metheringham and had a pleasant day and evening looking around. We went up to the old watch tower, which is half demolished and found that a fence is been put up around it and that it has been cleared of all the old rubbish and debris that was inside before. The following day we chatted with lovely lady who was on duty at the airfield visitor centre, but she could not shed any light on why the work had been started. She could only guess that the old tower was to be used for some purpose. I only hope it may become a museum or visitor centre itself, to commenmorate the people who served on the airfield during its operational life.

Another brief observation I would like to make is that while my son and I were just about to get into our car parked on the track running up to the madel aircraft club's hut. we both distinctly smelt what we thought was lavender. We have both read and heard the stories of hauntings on old airfield sites, and in this case the one about the Metheringham lass. I have visited many sites and although I do believe that there is some kind of atmosphere associated with these places I have never really experienced anything paranormal. What happened to my son and I at Metheringham was interesting because at that time neither of us was talking or thinking of the ghost, it just happened. The smell came and went for about two to three minutes. It was Saturday 25th of June at about 5pm in the afternoon, the weather was bright and clear, and a little breezy. Food for thought! What does anyone else think? Kevin.

Welcome to the forum Kevin. Not sure about the smell though. I assume there were no lavender fields nearby as a slight breeze might have wafted at that moment?

Welcome to AiX Kevin, do you have a favourite airfield?

You're lucky, the smells that I remember were all farm animals!

Kevin firstly may i welcome you to AIX and i hope your time with us answers the many questions you may have.

Now for the Metheringham tower yes it has been bought my one of our members here on AIX and he is restoring it to its former glory for people to walk around and photograph.

But this will only be the outside of the tower as the member in question will be living in the tower once its restored. Information boards will be going up on the site so that members of the public can read the history about Metheringham.

Again welcome to AIX
