The name is Mike. My last job took me contracting on Coningsby, Woodhall, Wittering, Barkston Heath, Coltishall, Scampton, Waddington, and my older non flying sites, Grantham. Digby, Swanton Morley, Waterbeach and others. I own ex Heathrow Airport Douglas Transporter, (was on MT section for heavy towing, recovery and Aircraft recovery from 1952 til 1982). Initially owned Ministry of Aviation Board of trade passing to B.A.A. (recovered 747 's on two occasions and help clear up after the Monarch accident)
I also own a United States sponsored RAF Land Rover 101 Rapier TRT that was based at West Raynham but served at Mildenhall and Lakenheath.
I used to own Ex RAF ACB Thornycroft Mighty Antar 40 AT 81, civvy reg 983 FUL that served many years on runway testing at most British Airfields, where it worked with a 50 Ton Dyson Trailer converter for the 70 Ton plate bearing testing of Runways. (I also bought and ran this trailer with the Antar for a 13 year period). This Antar also went to Holland and Germany, Malta, Gibraltar, Cyprus, and Antigua, on Runway testing even going by LST to the Hebrides for more runway testing duties. Normal Base for Antar was Cardington, where later she was used to open and close the 470 Ton doors on No2 Balloon Hanger. In lLater years she was owned by MPBW and PSA.
I have just sold a 1953 RAF AEC Matador that was built as a 50KvA generator carrierwith a signals type body, but later converted to an Aircraft Rectification Truck.
All of which has left me with an interest in Airfields and associated vehicles and equipment.
the firm I was working for was getting regular MOD contracts. We converted quite a number of Hanger doors, partially opening the two middle doors, welding all the doors in place, and then fitting steelwork for roller shutter dorrs with sheeting above that. From memory we did four at Waterbeach, one at Wittering, one at Luffenham, one at Scampton in the Toucana upgrade hanger, but there we put in a concertina door. Worked in the BFI's at Coningsby, and Scampton. Put up a new Building on Coningsby, Retracked a hanger door at Coltishall, worked on hardened doors of quite a few of the HAZ's at Coningsby, We did more door work at Cranwell, (three doors, no I make that four). I did quite a lot of fencing at Conningby, in the Old Bomb dump, , along the perimeter from the Boston road, all the way round the back of the rifle range and up to Crash gate 4?. About 1 1/4 miles there, and all the frangible fencing by Dogdyke road.
We changed wheel Bearings in the BofB Hanger, and put a lot of steel reinforcement into the roof of same building.
And an awful lot of silly one and two day jobs.........
Quite a lot of work on the new spraybooths, Work on the vehicle washing facility, Conversion of M.V. building into new Hydraulics servicing facility, Junior Officers mess work, demolition if the old Control tower at Coningsby. Door track work to Number 2 and 4 hangers at Coningsby
Painting and fitting fall arrest gear to all the mast, beacons etc at Waddington., Fitting new access ladders fire escapes to all four Hangers at Scampton. Putting in new Spiral Staircases in accommodation at Scampton, Work on the Bombing range at Wainfleet, Work on Birdproofing the new Hush House at Coningsby, work within the "burning area" at Coningsby. Changing the wooden doors on the GEF workshops at Waddington to Roller Shutters, Slidi8ng Barrier change at the entrance to Waddington Bomb dump.
