Good Morning

Thanks for your reply. I know there was a bombing range close to the nearby villages of Mowsley and Saddington but I'm not sure where exactly. I think this was used by aircraft from Market Harborough and Bruntingthorpe. Do you think the local authority may have some old records?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

I know that aircraft from RAF Husbands Bosworth defitnetly used the Mowsley bombing range and that it was closed on the 16th June 1945. I'm afraid i don't know it's exact position other than that it's north of Husbands B airfield near Mowsley though.

Hi Steve

Thanks for this. Have been trying to trace this site for 2 years. Was under the impression it was between Mowsley and Saddington, the next village to the north. Could never understand because of the terrain.

PNK has given me a grid reference (SP643870) which appears to be on the eastern side of the A5199, north of Husbands Bosworth village. This is an area of hilly farmland. There is a local farmer who has land dedicated to paintballing, tank driving etc very close. Perhaps this could be the site.

Thanks again

Dave

Dave,

If you find a more accurate location let me know. I tend to use the target location as the main reference point, otherwise any other confirmed feature.
I think the tank/paintball location claims it is sited on an old bombing range - a bit vague but adds weight to the general area being correct.

I know exactly where you mean Dave. That would seem like a likely place for it.

Yep!! I've just checked the website and it does claim to be sited on a WW2 Bombing Range! Thinking about it. It is certainly a lot flatter around there than the rest of the surrounding countryside. I think we may have solved it! :-D

Weren't you on line late last night? Fast asleep then! There's usually a tank parked in the entrance with its front end a little proud....a bit disconcerting if you come flying around the bend!

Hopefully solved that one...annoying when you realise its nearer to Knaptoft.

Think we've cracked it. They park an old tank in the entrance to the site. If ever you're this way, you can't miss it. Mentioned to Stevie that the site is nearer to Naptoft than Mowsley although the area that the site appears to be in borders the "Mowsley Hills".

Have come across this site before but never joined, that is until now!
My main area of interest is underground military sites. How ever big or small a site is they were used for something and that is all part of the research.
Battle headquarters, small protective shelters (connected with deceptive schemes) and semi underground structures are currently being researched in Sussex, where I live.
Look forward to posting in the future.
