Can we merge or delete this thread when the original poster acknowledges the link above?

I am acknowledging this link , but why merge it , I thought this area was for discussing what ever . And so far no one has offered a simplified answer to my question .What is a UNITER ????

RAF FTS (Fixed Telecommunications System)

The RAF FTS supports UKADGE in the defence of UK airspace. If a target is detected, a central control decides the action to be taken. Good communications to other operational units, support units and emergency services are essential. The RAF FTS ensures good communications between all these agencies and authorities. The systems provides for 3 areas:
a. Voice – person to person (either secure or not)
b. Recorded messages – written orders or signals (achieved via DCN).
c. Data – transfer of data is important and circuits carrying data normally have dedicated lines.

The RAF FTS consists of a variety of different types of media used to carry information (called Boxer) and various types of equipment used to send and receive the information (called Uniter).

BOXER

Data Links.
The network of Service-owned lines and information links that carry information all round the country.
It includes fibre optic, microwave and satellite links.

UNITER

Hardware.
Uniter provides the switching and terminal equipment which allows the user to communicate information to a receiver.
Communication will include voice, recorded messages and data as described above.

BDU: I think you will find that you cannot get a better, simpler, explanation of what UNITER is than the posts at #61 and #74 on the original thread.

Regards

Bill

Whilst I see your point, the General Discussion section is intended as a place for anything that can't reasonably be put into any of the other relevant sections. As there is a UNITER thread already we will try to keep all information pertinent to it within that thread - otherwise things can get messy and it's more difficult to find all the information in one place.

To answer your question on what era, yes they were cold war but encompass a fairly extensive time period as the system was added to at different times.

Yes, I'm back(ish).

Hi Folks
A question, can anyone explain what a UNITER is without getting to technical . As I haven`t a Scooby doo !!!! I know there are plenty around the country but what was there function . And what period do they belong ie Cold War .

Not very helpful this, but just thought I would wish you luck if this is connected with Cold War security. I have been trying to discover what went on in the Battle Box in Hong Kong in the 1950s for years without success although it must have included secret coded communications. No-one will confirm anything.

Hi Canberra, the location is given in the same link that inspired your question on the UH thread, click on this www.secretscotland.org.uk/index.php/Secrets/UNITERBuildings and there is map showing the locations including the Dunfermline one.
Not all Uniters are on military establishments, some are are in normal locations but fenced off, a small number have been sold up for sale to anyone interested lately.

Edit, in fact the Dunfermline one is for sale here, www.scottishproperty.gov.uk/search/index...details&uprn=F011672

Just reading back through the thread again, we visited the Dunfermaline UNITER site around the time of the sale - we were given access inside but asked not to publish our photographs online. I am sure there was some mention on an earlier MOD site nearby so it could have been built on MOD land - there is a pair of towers further up the track.
