News from Hangar 1 at Teesside on Monday 1 September ;
The engineers finished at 7pm tonight to go and have a pint in The Oak Tree Inn at Middleton St George which was a regular wartime haunt for the Canadians based at Goosepool . So just an eleven hour day today , just !
The new merlin has been attached to the bulkhead but a lot of the plumbing still needs to be complete before the propeller is fitted and the engine test run . If all goes well with the harness work tomorrow it is hoped to be able to ground run the Lanc late afternoon tomorrow with departure planned for Wednesday . The pilots came up today as did some more spare parts both of which were air-ferried in from Coningsby .
Despite the cancellation of the flypast it was still as great as ever at EK. Here's a couple from today. Fingers crossed that a replacement date can be sorted -
This company service all the BoBMF merlins but not as yet the Dakota Pratt & Whitney's ; www.retrotrackandair.com/
. All the day to day maintenance is carried out by the RAF but all the major work goes to Retro at their Gloucester workshop .
They also service and maintain a lot of engines for UK warbird operators and were heavily involved in getting the Canadian Lancaster airborne again at Teesside .
And its a small world. A bloke popped in to work yesterday, hes been retired five years and his son is a captain on 8 Sqn. Turns out hes also a BBMF Dakota captain and Lancaster co-pilot, he managed to get his dad a Dakota trip but the BBMF has a blanket ban on civvies flying on the Lancaster. Oh and since retired hes also flown in a Spitfire. Am I jealous? What do you think!!!!
