When were the problems first realised with asbestos? I dont think they would have been in force during wwii, after all there was asbestos in gas masks. It could be a warning to use crawling board on the roof.

Just looked on wikipedia and it was as early as 1924, though it wasnt until 1932 that anything was really done. So why were all these buildings made from asbestos then!?

I think the building material was no more dangerous than cement. It is the insulation material that is dangerous.
Cement can be dangerous though, especially breathing the dust in and get wet cement in your eyes.

Assuming the Post 1 huts are WW2 vintage then gas warning panels is almost certainly the answer.
