Ian ~ My limited digging had come to the same conclusion and it would be the nearest RFF to the airfields ?

I'm sure that you have already accessed the following sites but will include the links for anybody else that's interested.

www.thefullwiki.org/Filling_Factories#wi...2C_Filling_Factories

www.disused-stations.org.uk/features/thorp_arch/index.shtml

Does any one know if the Torpex filling had come from Waltham Abbey as that also appears nearest to the Elstow Filling Factory ?

There is stuff on the Elstow thread, but mainly about Blue Danube:

I seem to recall several books being published in years past with some coverage of the topic. Will see what I can dig up when next at home.

I'm not doing too well with this research.

The only positive reference to filling Tallboy and Grand Slam is ROF Elstow (Bedford)

If anyone knows any other ROF who lay claim to this please let me know.

Thanks Ian

I had a look through the book on ROF Chorley last night but could not see any mention (no index). There is a picture of a large RAF bomb being filled but I think it is just one of the conventional big ones (blockbuster?).

Lots of newspaper reports in 1946 in the bombs being taken around the country and put on display, I would have expected local papers might have made some comment about them being made / filled locally when they visited their area.

Martin,

So far Glascoed and Elstow seem favourites. Thanks for checking the Chorley connection.

In Ian Hay's 'ROF - The Story of the Royal Ordnance Factories' there is a photo of a tallboy being machined at Woolwich.

There is also a picture of a 22,000 lb weapon being filled, but sadly it seems to be the only plate in the section without a location!

In 1946 the RAF had 300 Grand Slams, and 3,250 12,000lb bombs.

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite

Hello,

I'm still struggling with this.

My original question was " Which ROF Filled the Grand Slam"

I am sure we have eliminated Swynnerton, and Elstow.

I just bought Flower's book on Barnes Wallis Bombs, and that does not help either.

Has anyone any ideas, please?

Ian

Not sure if this is any help but a visitor information board at Risley is here:

www.warrington.gov.uk/download/downloads...26/early_history.pdf

With a claim they were filled there.

Thank you for this positive reference. So far I had been starting with the full list of WW2 filling factories and deleting them as I knew more about each site.

Regards Ian

Bouncing-Bomb Man by Ian Murray has the following;-

"The ROF Woolwich was to fill inert stores. ROF Risley to fill the live stores."
