I have mentioned before about the unusual items that turn up in Hunsdons ploughsoil. The hardcore for the perimeter tracks, runways and hardstands was rubble brought in from blitzed buildings of London.

Where the concrete has been removed, the rubble has worked its way into the soil and it is not unusual to see bits of Yorkstone, slate, marble, plaster, roof tile, cast iron guttering and pipe fragments, glass and even bits of Bakelite light switches.

Since the fields are either under harvest, or have been harrowed in the last week, I went along there for one of my usual weekend walks today to spot any artifacts lying in the ploughsoil. One thing that the plough had turned up was a square concrete perimeter track light socket bearing traces of Yellow paint,sadly no fitting was in it, I didnt have the camera on me, so thats an excuse to take a photo tomorrow. Then I found and took home this piece for the garden rockery.

I wonder if it is from a church or an old house. It is not stone, but like a very light concrete, so is it a molding? my knowledge of such items is non existant. I also wonder what this has 'seen' in its life, a few stories to tell if it could speak no doubt!

Light weight stuff a bit like pozzolana then Denis.

You have just sent me googling pozzolana now Chris! When I say it is light, it is lighter than a normal piece of concrete at the same size. Do you know when material like this was produced? is it eighteenth century or a lot older?

Pozzolana is Roman stuff made from volcanic material so it's very old.

Found it last week at Stowell Park near Northleach when we walked the grounds of the old US Army Field Hospital and Polish Schools.

We're in the process of tracking down the owner and have a fairly strong lead at the moment.

Agreed, a great find and let us know what the outcome of the search is.

We've managed to get the chaps enlistment records and have a lead on him being a member of the American Legion in 1995 so we're following that up with what we suspect was his local branch.

Still a bit confused by the punched "9" figures on the tag though.
