And on 2nd of June 53 RAF Canberras flew film of the Coronation from Heathrow to Canada, it was called operation pony express. Given the time difference the film was shown on Canadian TV by 2PM local time.

Flown to Goose then onto Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto by the RCAF. Canada saw the footage before the US!

Quite right too as she is Queen of Canada!

Interesting fact; In 1959(it might have been 58) the Queen and Eisenhower opened the St Lawrence seaway. The ceremony took place on the US side and it was the first time the Queen was in a country of which she was not head of state not as Queen of the UK. She was of course there as Queen of Canada.

Canberras at Cottesmore.

Many thanks once again to Nigel Bailey-Underwood for allowing me to share his photos on the forum.

in the first shot you can see a marque in the back ground, would this have been a family day inn the early 70s?

I’m guessing it would have been the Canberra 25th anniversary event held at Cottesmore in May 1974. I’ll find out from Nigel. He doesn’t always put years, dates & events on some of the old photos he sends me unfortunately.
