I hope theyve got all the documentation for that Merlin! Back in the early eighties the Vintage Pair were offered a couple of DH Goblin engines, but the RAF wouldnt touch them without paperwork.
If mechanical parts wear or go kaphutt...are spares available or is each component individually engineered each time ??
Basically it's both. They will refurbish exisiting parts, use spares or use reburbished 2nd hand spares. Sometimes they will also have to re-manufacture some parts. As long as they are made and refurbished via recognised methods, used correct materials and can be 'signed off' by trainined and authorised personnel, they will be airworthy.

Its phenominal what they can do sometimes!
Thanks for that - I always wondered, its amazing that there are parts still around - its not as though one can dig up a WW2 wreck and scavenge parts from that....
wonder if there will be a documentary made on the restoration to flying condition
Late last night upon the stair, I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today Oh how I wish he'd go away

Again, you'd be surprised! Some of the things that are dug up can be returned to flight if the are in good enough condition (they can be x-rayed, NDT'd all sorts to prove it) and of course reburbished. Long since lost items that are re-found when dug up can also be used as patterns for new parts where drawings and parts no longer exist although that would be a quite rare occurrence.
I've been watching the rebuild of the Barracuda at the FAAM and they are taking tangled, twisted bits of metal that look like screwed up aluminimum foil and flattening them out again to be re-fitted to the aircraft. There are no Barrcaudas in existance anymore so they have no option but re-buld from the twisted wreck that was pulled out of a peat bog in the 70's. It'll never fly, but it will be an astounding restoration!
About 35yrs ago, an electrician friend of mine was working at Sculthorpe in Norfolk.
He was told by one of the Americans there, that when servicemen were transferred back
to the States, they often buried their cars at the base.
Thanks for that link. Listening to it right now & am really wishing I was in Lincolnshire right now rather than getting ready for work:cry:. Sounds like both Lancs, 2 Spits & 2 Hurricanes flying together for a final farewell formation over Coningsby, Waddo, Cranwell, Scampton & the Cathedral. Hope there's some Aixers getting some photos.
Is anyone aware of any documentaries that may come out of this tour? Since I swapped my usual September trip back home to June, I am missing all the fun!
There's two dvd's coming out. One is an official documentary concentrating about the actual flight over to the UK & Planes TV are making a dvd called Avro Sisters which follows the flight around the majority of their UK airshow & flypast appearances. It will also feature some Vulcan footage as well including that awesome 2 Lancs & Vulcan formation last month.
Steve
Just got a got the official dvd of the tour "Reunion of Giants" well worth a watch.
