Might be either. Versions of both Bleheim and Beaufighter had 3 blade variable pitch props. The gear arrangement on the subject prop was to drive the pitch mechanism for constant speed.
The blades seem to be bent the wrong way. If the aircraft was travelling forward wouldn't they be bent towards the gears? Is this because of an undercarriage collapse perhaps?
I will stand corrected but the pitch gears would have been covered by the propeller spinner.
I don't know much about the gubbins but the gears would be on the engine side of the paddle things.
As the blenheim over here has a habit of crashing there will likely be photos or videos of it's various rebuilds. You could try comparison to that Rich. I don't have any photos here but fairly sure the spinner on it is quite thin rather than conical. Fairly sure the beaufighter was similar.
Just looking at "Beaufighter at War" by Chris Bowyer, which has several photos taken after belly landings. The earlier Merlin and Hercules powered versions seem to have the larger spinners, which could cover the prop. pitch gearing.
I thought that the blades were bent the 'wrong way' too. I just can't imagine any scenario such as collapsed undercarriage, forced landing, ground loop, etc., which would cause this.....
That's a hefty bit of kit to have forward of the propeller, even if it was covered! I did think of contra-rotating props but the un-propped gears looked wrong. Any idea what the gears do as they seem to reverse rotation with a slight reduction or increase, depending on direction?
