Ian, the article mentions that the York filming was done at St Mawgan and the ground shots are definitely filmed there on the north side as are the taking off sequences, the low level ground to air sequences look more like Wiltshire though.

Thanks james...I had looked at Aston Down on GM but could not ID a location there either (although I realise that layouts/buildings have disappeared since ww2)
How many MU's had Horsas ??
There was a bungalow in the background as he taxied out !

It's very typically an ASU airfield, remote storage sites near trees and local housing, didn't spot the bungalow but a Wardens office and married quarters house is clearly seen, one of which was built at each remote site. Horsas seemed to have appeared across many of the southern ASUs, I think Brize Norton was the main one associated with the type though.
I would agree not Aston Down as there appears to be a large amount of housing nearby in the early sequences, I wonder if it is actually shot at BN with Carterton or Brize village behind?

Edit, or could it be here at Cosford?!! www.flashearth.com/?lat=52.641136&lon=-2...&z=17.4&r=0&src="msa" I can make it all fit, only doubt is the metal hangars, but wonder if that could be filmed on the otherside of the airfield?

Interesting stuff James...
I also had looked at the Brize option but (1) could not find a ww2 layout for BN and (2) did not think that many Lancs ended their days there !?!?
The Cosford location looks very good though !!did they have both Horsas and Lancs there ??

Edit...yes would the double pitched roof hangars preclude Cosford ?
I liked Kemble for those - Kemble having the 2 ex reds Super Robins,of course it could be 2 different locations but that seems unlikely !

I can't think which village would appear that close to the storage sheds at Kemble?

I'm 99% sure its Cosford, I took a pic of a Spitfire with the hangars behind and the village appears in the distance as it does in that film.
I tracked the (short!) journey of the Oxford in the film and it fits with the layout pinpointed at Cosford. The metal hangars could have been the Bellman or double B1s on the other side, many of the MUs had numbers of Robins sheds as well.
Horsas were covered by the MU there, as for Lancasters they seemed to have ended up going into storage at many difrerent ASUs, not just those necessarily connected with maintenance of the type.

One way to get the airfield is to find out where that particular Oxford ended up, something I'm unable to do.

Thanks James...I could not find where that aircraft ended its days either !
I will view the film again at the weekend and see if I can spot any hangar clues.
