RN maybe? My only thought is how many airfields would keep crew ladders for Buccaneers? They did't take them with them do they?

Everything except the crewroom kitchen sink would've gone with them in those day's Peter!!!

Yes, any long range deployment required a detachment of maintenance men with round support equipment and anticipated spares that usually went ahead by transport aircraft so they were on hand for the landings.

It's none of the towers suggested so far, doesn't look familiar as a UK tower to me. Wondering if it could be any of the RAFG towers, Larbruch, Bruggen etc?
You can see in the background that support equipment is in place.

It's not Laarbruch, Bruggen or any of the RAFG airfields. It looks American to me, may be Canadian. Could be a USAF base in Europe somewhere, but seems unlikely with a 208 squadron aircraft. As I recall they only went to Gib or Norway. Since the aircraft has proper Bucc ladders fitted, it was probably on a squadron detachment. Thinking Nellis, Red Flag or maybe Cold Lake, Maple Flag, or staging through somewhere on the way to one of those places.

When the Bucc squadrons went away they took at least one Herclules full of kit and groundcrew with them, sometimes more.

I think you're right, the VCR looks to be of a standard US design, I thought they all had elevated towers, but maybe not?

Something like a Red Flag deployment

Thanks for all the suggestions, but it seems to be none of those? I knew it wasnt a UK airfield simply by the VCR, checked US airfields in Germany but its none of those either. But it also seems not to be Nellis or Cold lake unless the tower in the picture has been removed and replaced, both airfields have elevated towers now.

Still none the wiser, LOL
