Does anyone recognise this place?
I would say that it is one of the smaller RAF SAR Whirlwind bases, possibly mid 1970s to early 1980s. The tower looks like one of the classic WWII watch office types, modified.
Initially I was thinking Chivenor, before the newer tower/VCR, but I would think that the concrete would be in better order and maybe some Hunters in the background.
Could it be Acklington or Boulmer?
Can anyone confirm absolutely where it is?

Don't forget the SAR helicopters used to go for a week to remote sites for a jolly where they would be get to know local MRT, RNLI, CG etc as well do normal SAR work. They used to come down to Oban and stay in the old ROC Group HQ - it remained owned and used by the MOD after the ROC moved out. Though it would normally be just one helicopter.

I don't think it is Acklington as the landscape doesn't look how I remember it (1976) although there was a dirty great open cast mine there then. I don't think Boulmer had a control tower at the SAR area but I may be wrong.

Thanks for the help chaps.
It is Chivenor, I would say taken from the northern perimeter, looking south towards the village of Yelland.
What threw me was where the Whirlwinds are parked, as the SAR dispersal I knew of was well north of the tower, but perhaps it hadn't been built then.
They seem to be parked on an area forward of the main parking areas so perhaps that explains the lack of Hunters or Hawks in shot.
Later shots of the tower help confirm the location, quite distinctive with the Nissan hut to one side.

I did a short tour there in 1968 and the 22 Sqn dispersal (SAR) was a dedicated spur off the taxiway located SE of the Tower behind the Officers Mess.
Any date given for that image?

Hi Peter,
No date sadly, I would estimate mid 1970s until the Whirlwinds' retirement c.1981.
the nearest one is the remaining flying example.
Nice to see a clear shot of the tower, how it was.

When the Hunters moved out it re-located to the north west corner of the airfield just east of the runway 16 threshold but looking at the state of the apron, maybe they were temporarily housed there while the new northern pan was built but before the re-build.
The control tower in the photo appears to have been demolished in the re-build of the '80s and replaced by a newer one closer to the runway.
