Anyone know where this is?

Not the DH Albatross, but the land it is flying over. Someone must know, a photo that has always intrigued me..

I don't have an answer, but some pretty distinctive features. Looks like a storage depot served by rail with a river feature that should be identifiable at at the top.

The RAF only had two of this type and used it on the Prestwick to Reykjavík route. The terrain in the photo is flat so it could be Ayrshire. I looked on google maps, hoping to find that river feature (top right of photo) in Ayshire. I reckon its the junction of the River Ayr and the water of Coyle at 55.497754, -4.386339

I reckon the industrial facility in centre shot is Killoch Colliery at 55.452045, -4.408903

I must admit, it doesn't look like what I'd describe as a coal mining area to me, but somewhere Killoch and inland from Prestwick it is then. Thank You.

Don't be too quick to thank me. I dug a little deeper and found that the colliery I thought was in the shot was only built in the late 50's. The aircraft was destroyed I think in 1942 so its back to the drawing board. Good fun though. We need to identify that industrial/storage depot with the rail lines running into it.

Going by the tree lined river curve and its junction, I'm tempted to think that its the Ouse and Derwent, near Drax, in Yorkshire (SE of Selby). That would put the facility as being around what was the Barlow airship works pre-war. Does anyone have a map of the right age to confirm this? It's either where the power station now is, or prior to that, an, unexplained area devoid of field boundaries to me, about SE656283.
The Barlow works had a huge shed, demolished late 80's ish, and I think there was some kind of ROF at Drax, which might be the same name..

That confirms it. It co-existed with the power station until buried in ash. Rare for war-time photos to give away 'secrets' like this, which is why I've been wondering for a decade or two.

While I was posting the picture up, I rather felt that the river feature has a 'Vale of York' feel to it, otherwise I wouldn't have found it.
