Which Airfield?

Which Airfield? was created by youngmangonewest
Evening all. I'm trying to identify the airfield in the attached photograph. The context is CIA covert operations circa 1965 in connection with the Congo. The airfield looks to me to be British, but I have no firm information to that effect. At first I thought the plane either a Flying Fortress or Superfortress, but the nacelles don't look quite right.

Does anyone have any idea please which airfield this might be? Very many thanks.

Regards,
Richard

Not sure of the location or the aircraft but assume it would have changed by now, making comparisons difficult. The question is where in Africa might it be to even start looking. The aircraft could be a later US transport type like a C-118 rather than a wartime upgraded one.

The nacelles suggest a B-50 to me. (Think of of a Superfortress on steroids). Maybe the airfield is European?

Can't help with the airfield, but given the context I suggest the aircraft may be a civilianised KC-97 or a Stratocruiser.

The patchwork fields and airfield layout suggest, to me, somewhere in Belgium.

Thanks for the replies, all very helpful.

Having carefully checked online photos, to examine the detail of the prop boss (sorry, I'm sure it has a proper name), I believe Graham has the plane right as a KC-97.

Canberra, yes, it could be Alconbury, having checked some map images, but the layout doesn't look exactly right. Of course, though, this will quite likely have changed. Belgium is an interesting idea, given the Congo context.

All further thoughts very much welcome.

Richard

Definitely not in the UK that I know of, I would guess at Europe somewhere but the last time we had something similar it was a Russian airfield!

It's difficult with the inevitable changes made over the last sixty years but if it is Belgium then Beauvechain Air Base could be a contender. Take a look see what you think.

A contender, but no cigar I think!

This really is tricky.
