Whats happening with Chipping Ongar then?


We the HAMG,had been involved in discussions with the Historian for the airfield some time back. We have identified the right spot for the future memorial, but that depends on the landowners generosity and also planning permission. Speaking to the historian a few months ago it was hinted that although the memorial project is on a back burner at the moment, it will eventually happen.

You mentioned Birch in your list SS, Birch airfield I believe did not have any flying combat units, and was more or less unused.

Whilst carrying out a tidying up of this folder I came across this particular interesting thread. There has clearly been some amendments to the list REF originally created, however below is I think a comprehensive list of those former airfields that still do not have a memorial at the actual site or for example in the local village / local church or ABCT Information plaques too . . .

I am certain I've missed some off - so please feel free to amend / correct A/R . . .

Just running through ones i know up here in the Highlands.

I don't think there is one at Connel itself. There is a memorial in Oban for Oban which probably includes Connel.

Longman?

Is there anything at Port Ellen and / or Bowmre?

Cromarty had a role in some early use of seaplanes by the RN.

Catfoss has a very impressive airfield memorial which stands outside of the premises of HC Robinson a builders merchants who supplied all of the materials free of charge . One of the company directors , Rodney Robinson a then ARG member was the person behind the project ; www.airfieldresearchgroup.org.uk/forum/y...irfield-memorial#390 .

Croft has this plaque on site ;www.airfieldresearchgroup.org.uk/forum/y...emorial-plaque#68514 plus the statue of an airman in nearby Dalton On Tees .

Finningley , I'm pretty sure has an airfield memorial inside the terminal building on the first floor ? I've only been inside once !

Hooton Park has a memorial to 611 (West Lancashire) Squadron RAuxAF which I think also mentions the airfield ? It stands in a goods/transport/logistics yard away from the museum site which I am sure does now have it's own memorial ? I was there in September and will check my photos .
Edit ; the plaque on the museum site commemorates the centenary of the construction of the 'Hooton Park Hangars' , 1917 to 2017 . I will post a photo up in the Cheshire Memorials section .

Errol has an ABCT memorial and also one to the Soviet airmen who trained there - pic at foot of this article -

David - a couple of errors on my part

All noted re Croft - Of course there is a memorial at the former site (& in Dalton x2) Finningley has a very impressive memorial outside the terminal building

List amended again to reflect your latest info. In that case there is a second memorial planned for Carnaby whilst the one for Turweston/Silverstone will hopefully return one day. . .??

Not been over for a few years but does www.ampaipear.org.uk/exhibition-explore-...la-airport/Benbecula Airport have a memorial of any sort?

An information panel could include its use in WWII then by the postwar - ground to air missiles and the larger ground to ground ones as well as a mention of the CRP alongside the airfield.

Treligga? Or was it merely a range with grass landing strips? As far as the FAA was concerned it was a satellite of St Merryn.
