I am trying to establish the location of WW2 Bomb Stores at the following airfields:
Melton Mowbray
Kingscliffe
Wymeswold
Glatton (AKA Conington)
A NGR would be good but any pointers such North, East, South, West etc or related to the Runway heads (ends) would suffice. Be aware that Kingscliffe may have had more than one site; an original plus a later addition.
I think the one at Wymeswold is centered on SK 586 232
Can't give an exact location but having visited Melton recently and knowing where the technical and dispersed sites are (to the north-east), I would hazard a suggestion that the bomb dump is somewhere to the west or south-west of the airfield site.
Hope this helps and I'm sure someone else can be more precise.
Chris
"We either stand down or blow up - which do you want!"
Glatton's was just north of the B660, centered on 173877ish. According to Local.live there is nothing left, just a very vague outline. The access roads were from the peri-track joining runways 10 and 15. (Mighty Eighth War Manual)
Kingscliffe didn't have one (ATB site plan)
As Chris reported Wymeswold's is north of the minor road to Hoton, where there was a large dispered area of 19 hardstandings. These are long gone, but the outline and access roads to the dump are clearly visible on Local.live. A large shed and wooded area are now present. (RAFM Hendon Site Plan)
Melton is a mystery at present
Any more ?
Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite
The bomb stores at Melton Mowbray were south of the intersection of the two subsidiary runways, beyond the perimeter track. They have been completely cleared and the site returned to agriculture.
Haven’t got access to an OS map for the area so can’t provide a grid reference.
I have no doubt that they have been cleared since I can't see obvious traces in satellite imagery.
It is actually difficult to obliterate sites such as bomb stores without leaving traces that are visible to the trained eye yet it has happened at some airfields.
I shall now peruse thoroughly the area you have indicated and see what I can find.
I am seeking confirmation of the location of the Bomb Stores at MEMBURY. It was a Bomber OTU at some point so should have had a bomb store. Possibly in the northwest.
Also BIRCHAM NEWTON. As an expansion period station there should be a standard prewar bomb store to AM drawing 3054/36 plus support buildings. I cannot see anything in satellite images so it has probably been demolished and obliterated. Any pointers?
