Well we have or did have (I can't keep up) a Highways Agency. Driving through Lakenheath Airbase there were signs saying "Yield to Aircraft". Sorry my mind is drifting again.

Thornaby was upgraded in 1942 to Class-A (almost).
The main runway was extended at both ends and crossed the main A1045 Thornaby to Leven road, shown in red. The new peri-track became the A1045.
Certainly in the 1950s traffic lights were used but this was largely a safety feature since most aircraft would leave the main runway at the point shown, well before the end.
Note that the main runway is number '5' (other end is '2') which contravenes the method described in the appropriate Air Publication, which states it should be 1/4.
