airfields with public roads through them

While doing reasearch on Blackbushe I was wondering if there were any other fields built that had operational areas bisected by public roads? Although there is little sign of it now Blackbushe had 2 T2's and many loop dispersals south of the A30. Manston is the only other one I can think of? With the gliding runways to the north of the terminal.I know lots of fields had their domestic sites across the road(Biggin,Benson etc), any ideas?

Eye, Snetterton & Foulsham are three that spring to mind.

Off the top of my head, Bassingbourne had the 'Avenue', (see the current thread on Bassingbourne for details of that via the memorial plaque). Snetterton in Norfolk springs to mind too, with a Hangar and other tech buildings across the A11.

Membury near Lambourn has its NS runway cut off by the M4.

Harrington near Kettering has its housing area cut off from the technical site and runways by the A14.

The B3293 (Heslton to Gweek road) separated the airfield at Culdrose from the technical site until a new road was built in the 1980s. It was common for aircraft to taxi or be towed accross this road (once Ratings had stopped the traffic).

What is called "lighter than air road" on the north airfield at Cranwell is a public right of way.

And Pershore had a public road with traffic lights across its runway, and the most famous example is of course Gibraltar.

Heathrow had (or maybe still has) a public road named Eastchurch Road running through the maintenance hangar area to the east of the airport. The jets would be towed back and forth across the road. I believe it was also a bus route in the late 1960's. I walked it once way back then. You could get surprisingly close to the aircraft at that time, probably not now though.

Yes that road still exists.

Thorney Island is a very well known one, allthough the airfield is no longer active the road is still there going to East Thorney, the only way of getting to East Thorney is having a sponsor there to go, otherwise the army won't let you through even though it is a public road!!

Driffield I think had a road going past the edge of the camp that went across some taxiway to a dispersal area.

Barkstone Heath is another, there is some hangars on the other side of the road that runs to the east of the airfield.
