Avro Anson

I'm sure as a Scotsman, Solway, that you'll be happy to hear that TX226 is heading back north of the border to the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre early next year. An excellent acquisition for them. Click on More Info on web page for further story and photograph -

Many thanks Moth Minor. What great news! I loved that aeroplane and will need to dig out any photos I have and let the Montrose folk have copies if it will help them with their project. If it is coming North I will try and see it pass by if it comes up the M6. It will probably go up the East coast though. I'll get their email address from your link and get in touch with them. Good to hear about Annie after all these years. Grateful to you for the gen.

That's great, Solway - I'm sure the folks at Montrose will be interested in your photos. They're a nice bunch of guys and they're developing the museum really well. Looking forward to visiting again next year and seeing the Anson (and possibly your photos too)

I originally lived in Chesham, Bucks, not far from RAF Bovingdon. Several types operated from here including a plethora of Anson C19s and T21s.
When I joined the ATC in 1962, it was 'normal' to hitch hike to Bovingdon during the school holidays and try to scrounge empty seats.
On 5 Jun 1963, I flew in Anson PH859 from Bovingdon to Benson and back taking 1 hour 5 min for the return journey and on 30 Apr 1965, from Bovingdon to Tangmere and back in VL337 taking 1 hour 25 min for the return journey.
Originally these Ansons were operated by Fighter Command Communication Squadron and Coastal Command Communication Squadron but with the closure of Booker as an RAF station, Bomber Command Communications Squadron joined the other two at Bovingdon and amalgamated to form Southern Communications Squadron which, when Bovingdon itself was closed in 1968, moved to Northolt and amalgamated with Metropolitan Communications Squadron however, by this time, the Ansons had been retired and replaced with Beagle Bassets.

A visit to Montrose at the weekend gave us our first opportunity to see TX226. The museum is estimating five to six years for restoration.

And an Anson actually shot down a Bf109!!

I believe an Avro Rota was also credited with a 'kill' but I can't remember the exact details, so that's 2 kills by Avro products which weren't meant to be combat aircraft!
