Image #3 in the post below shows the rear view of both Ejection Seats. Note the hand painted legend identifying the pilot's seat and aircraft tail number. The seats then were on a six monthly calendar servicing and were removed, bay serviced, and re-installed so no 'floating' set of spare seats.
The aluminium 'can' attached to the rear of each seat rail is an soup heater with a 28vdc element. Supplied with the in-flight rations for the aircrew were bite sized sandwiches and cans of soup. A rear seat member would double pierce a can of soup and slide it into the heater then switch on the remote switch to heat. Presumably the heated soup was decanted into a mug for consumption.Of course, if the can was not pierced before heating...........
The semi-circular pocket on the side of the seat was the seat safety pins stowage attached by a split ring to a 3 inch diameter alloy disc. Before climbing into the seat the occupant had to remove the safety pins from their locking position (Safe for Parking) and slide the disc into the stowage.

She was looking a bit sorry for herself yesterday. She's currently moved out of the Hangar & parked out on the jet pan minus several bit & pieces. Her parking space in the Aerospace Hangar is currently being used for a 'quilt show'...yes, that's right...a quilt show.
She'll be moving into Hangar 5 soon though during November for the restoration work to continue & will be in there for up to 5 years.
Years ago, I asked one of our test pilots, Wg Cdr Dave Bywater who was OC Flying at the time about this. He said yes they did fly supersonic but not too much; something about too much strain on the tailplane.
He also mentioned that under the right conditions, the Vulcan could be pushed through M1 too.(just)
