Boeing 747

Too long ago for me to remember Canberra probably mid-70s. Flying commercially was very different in those days. I usually flew Cathay Pacific where I could take the kids onto the flight deck and shoot the breeze with the auto-pilot operators.

Peter, you were fortunate not to be on a unserviceable transit flight through Muscat pre 1983. Immigration would not let transit passengers off the aircraft in the event of a delay, they were made to stay on board. No transit facilities to speak of at the airport and very limited hotel accommodation available. Also not long after the end of the Dhofar War and security still a concern.

There's been quite a bit of 747 action at East Midlands Airport of late courtesy of the regular visits from Air Cargo & Kalitta. Here's a few photos I took recently -

I wonder if BA will do a flypast to celebrate the end of the 747 in their service?

So thats the end of the 747 in British Airways service. The last two left Heathrow on Thursday, one for St Athan and one for Kemble. The CAA gave permission for a flypast at Heathrow but due to the weather they were unable to do it. As for a final flight around the UK, BA management considered it but decided not to due to the pandemic.

The past 12 months have see A LOT of 747 operations at East Midlands Airport from various operators. Here's a selection of some that I photographed during the year -
